Delhi Capitals performed brilliantly in the season so far finishing at the top of the points table. Under the newly appointed captain, Rishabh Pant showed their skills and ended with 6 wins.
Delhi Capitals started their 2021 IPL journey with a win over Chennai Super Kings by 7 wickets played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on 10th April 2021. Despite Suresh Raina’s 54, Moeen Ali 36, quickfire knocks by Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, and Sam Curran, CSK posted 188 for 7. Avesh Khan was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 23.
Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw’s 138 runs opening partnership made the life easier for Delhi Capitals. Delhi Capitals won the match by 7 wickets with 8 balls remaining. For his 85 off 54 balls, Dhawan was awarded man of the match.
Delhi Capitals lost to Rajasthan Royals in a low-scoring thriller played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on 15th April 2021. It was a disappointing performance by DC batsmen as Dhawan, Shaw, Rahane and Marcus Stoinis failed to contribute. Pant led from the front and made 51. Despite his efforts, Delhi Capitals made 147 for 8.
Kagiso Rabada and Woakes ripped Rajasthan Royals reducing them to 42 for 5. Avesh Khan showed his bowling skills with yorkers getting rid of dangerous Miller at the right time. Chris Morris played a blinder of innings to help Rajasthan Royals win the match by 3 wickets in the 20th over.
Delhi Capitals won 2 matches in succession defeating Punjab Kings and then the defending champions Mumbai Indians.
Despite Punjab Kings scoring 195 for 4 in 20 overs, Dhawan led from the front and scored a match-winning 61 to help Delhi Capitals win the match by 6 wickets with 10 balls to spare. Delhi Capitals took on Mumbai Indians at M Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on 20th April. Amit Mishra returning into the squad did not allow MI to score runs easily picking up 4 for 24 in 4 overs. The other DC bowlers kept tight lines and lengths.
Dhawan played a responsible knock on a slow and low pitch scoring 45 off 42 balls. His knock helped Delhi Capitals win by six wickets with 5 balls to spare.
Delhi Capitals registered a thrilling win over Sunrisers Hyderabad. Shaw played a superb knock of 53 along with Pant and Smith, DC posted 159 for 4. Avesh Khan showed his skills picking up 3 for 34. Kane Williamson held his nerves along with Suchith took the game into the Super Over. Axar Patel delivered the goods giving away just 7 runs while Pant and Dhawan registered a win on the last ball.
Despite Shimron Hetymer and Pant’s unbeaten partnership, Delhi Capitals lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore by just 1 run at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on 27th April. Thanks to AB de Villiers special, RCB posted 171 for 5 in 20 overs.
Chasing down 172 runs to win, DC lost wickets of Dhawan, Shaw, Smith, and Stoinis. Pant took some time but Hetymer put enough pressure on RCB bowlers. Both batsmen scored half-centuries, but Pant could not finish the game.
Delhi Capitals registered emphatic wins over Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings. A superb bowling effort restricted KKR to 154 for 6 in 20 overs. Shaw showed his class hitting 6 successive boundaries of Mavi in the first over. DC openers made sure that they register a 7-wicket win.
They ended the tournament with a commanding 7 wicket win over Punjab Kings. Thanks to a brilliant 99 not out, Punjab Kings posted 166 for 6. Dhawan showed his skills and remained not out on 69 to register a 7 wicket win with 14 balls to spare. With that, Delhi Capitals ended at the top of the points table.
Dhawan finished halfway stage as the leading runs scorer. He made 380 runs from 8 matches (8 innings) with 3 half-centuries and the best score of 92. Dhawan created enough pressure on the bowlers and gave important starts to the team along with Shaw.
Avesh Khan led from the front in the bowling department. He took 14 wickets from 8 matches ( 8 innings) at an economy of 7.70 runs per over. Khan bowled with pace and troubled the best batsman in the world.
